This "America" you speak of is vast and diverse Amber. Being from South Louisiana, I can tell you that we have foods you have never seen in Buffalo or Seattle. Please feel free to come on down to Cajunland and see what a great melange of culinary influences makes us unique and adds great dimension to that big bad America that quarrelsome Canadians like to speak of so highly. We grow our own rice there and season our great variety of seafoods, meats and vegetables with spices that would make a moose dance and shout. By the way, Chinese food is amazing and the best fish and chips I ever had was in Vancouver. Cheers.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you can also add 这么 and 那么 to this pattern. E.g. 她有什么那么漂亮呢？

How different does that sound from 中国菜有什么好吃的呢？Softer tone with the 呢？Or is actually a question and not a sarcastic comment with the 呢？

quasifrog--let me assure you that Amber has never been anything more than a day-tourist in Seattle. As for Louisiana food, the other day I ordered a po' boy, and she was amazed at the majesty and diversity of American cuisine.
I don't have a 那有什么。。。呢 sentence to contribute to the conversation, but I would like to say that my zi of the day is 哼！

If you really wanted to turn it into a question could you also just use 吗 as well as 呢 ?
So when asking 那有什么好吗, would the GREAT lose emphasis and just be interpreted as a normal question?

No, you wouldn't add a 吗 (ma) in this pattern. It's already a question sentence without it.

Amber already gave you the answer, I'd merely like to add why : 什么 is just a question word, like 哪 or 谁. If you expect an answer, use your voice to indicate this (a high pitched "na" and raising the voice towards the end), or use a different pattern, for example, "So, why do you think that's romantic?" (But if you manage to annoy your interlocutor by questioning the validity of his assessment, he'll probably reply anyway ;-) )

Hi Connie, is it possible that we could have the English with the sentences in future QWs, as well as the pinyin and the Mandarin? I bu jidele words like qíguài, and I don't really think I learned Shēngyúpiàn (even though it was in the podcast). Thanks.

Hey, the Little Prince is great literature! Everyone who thinks it's only appropriate for children has not read the first three pages of it properly, with an open mind AND heart!
It seems to be very popular amongst learners of foreign languages, though - it was the first book I ever read in Spanish and German, respectively, and I see so many students sitting around with the Japanese or French version clutched in their hands.
By the way, Clay, (oh, it rhymes...lame, I know) I'd like to encourage you to reflect on 美国菜 (what qualifies as American food?) and your distaste for Chinese food in the 真好吃的! group. ;-)

You can say:
这两个手机有什么区别？Zhè liǎng ge shǒujī yǒu shénme qūbié？
but it doesn't have the sarcastic connotation that the sentence pattern we discussed here has. Sarcastic in Chinese is 讽刺 (fěngcì).

Tell them about chili con queso, fajitas and Margaritas, Tex-Mex, not Spanish or Mexican, and definitely American. Amber is 美丽 but we can't let a Canadian dis our awesome food here in the US!

Offtrack warning. Maybe.
Has Qingwen, or any other part of CPod, already done [VERB] de chu1lai2, bu chu1lai2 and [VERB] de qi2lai2, bu qi2lai2? When I've searched, I come up empty-handed.
If Cpod hasn't yet done these verb modifiers, could you guys do so? It is one of the most confusing aspects (for me) of speaking Mandarin.
