Unfortunately, all the water you drank to keep hydrated and beat jet lag is starting to... well, let's say you've got some personal business to attend to. In this lesson, we'll hear how to ask for directions to the bathroom, and hopefully how to find our way there!

Hi! Wanted to let you know that there's a problem in the expansion section of the website for this lesson - the english translations don't match up correctly with the spanish phrases, starting with "No cierra la puerta" (should say "Don't close the door"?) Hopefully it's easy to fix!April 1, 2008

npshirley, The second /d/ in "donde" is the hard [d], because it's coming off an /n/ sound. When /d/ is between two vowels, it's usually pronounced [ð]. This is a matter of descriptive phonology; i.e., it describes how Latinos pronounce it, but not necessarily how I teach it. I usually just teach that the /d/ is pronounced [ð], and leave it at that. But because the /n/ stops the airflow through the mouth, the following /d/ often just naturally comes out as [d] not so much by rule as by accident. (all you linguistics majors out there can now chime in about segmental assimilation based on point of articulation!)April 3, 2008

lisamax "Disculpe y disculpa are both unisex. You can use it both when you are talking to a man or a woman. "Disculpa" is when you are using the "tu" form and "disculpe" the "usted" form. So when you talk to someone your age you say "disculpa" someone older and a stranger then "disculpe".April 9, 2008

donde esta el bano - it is pronounced dond es elbano? It seems that you skip over a few of the consonants when you say it fluently.. When you say it slowly I hear all the pieces of the sentence.. You know what I mean? How do I know to do this?April 20, 2008

light487, What you are hearing is vowels running together in a way that you're not used to. If you're an English native speaker like me, we have English-specific ways of pronouncing and hearing vowels. Those Englsih-specific ways of hearing do not apply to Spanish. There are some Spanish dialects where consonants "drop" but not in this dialog. You will learn to develop an ear for Spanish the more you study it, and you'll find that Spanish spelling is way, way, waywayway more systematic than English or French or even pinyin. I've explained the vowel thing many times on these discussion pages, it's probably time I did a Pa' que sepas.... on that topic. Stay tuned!April 20, 2008

It's a bit like here in Australia.. we don't say Os-tray-lee-ya we just say Os-tray-lya.. it rolls off the tongue more naturally without the hard EE sound. So I guess it's the same thing.. more of an accent thing than anything else. I bet there are tonnes of examples where my Aussie accent does the same thing to common English. :)April 20, 2008
